Abruzzo is a mountainous region in central Italy, with a significant Adriatic coastline. It is Italy's fifth most significant wine-producing region by volume. Like much of Italy, the region enjoys a warm climate and this is combined with an extensive variety of favourable, hillside sites that stretch all the way to coast. Red wines are mostly made from the high quality Montepulciano variety, while white wines consist of Trebbiano and a small amount of other local, indigenous varieties such as Pecorino.
This unique local rosé, has long been closely associated with Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. For over 40 years they were grouped under the same DOC. Indeed, the two wines derive from the same grape variety, the main difference of course being the skin contact time. However, something finally changed in 2010 and Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is now officially recognized as an independent DOC wine.
