Ramón Bilbao is a renowned Spanish winery based in Rioja, known for producing high-quality wines that blend tradition with innovation. Established in 1924, the winery specializes in crafting elegant, complex wines, with a focus on Tempranillo grapes. Their top-tier wine, Mirto, is made from old vines in select vineyards and is produced only in exceptional years, reflecting the excellence and craftsmanship that define the Ramón Bilbao legacy.
The vineyards are located in Cuzcurrita at 450 meters altitude, with a north-south orientation and an extreme continental climate, which helps preserve acidity and freshness in the white wines. The soils are shallow, alluvial, and covered with stones, which allow for low water retention and help the grapes ripen by absorbing heat.
The wine was clarified by gravity, with fermentation in concrete tanks at different temperatures: Maturana Blanca at 15ºC to enhance floral character, and Tempranillo Blanco at 17ºC for complexity and structure. The wine was aged on fine lees, with 1/3 in concrete, 1/3 in amphora, and 1/3 in 600-liter French oak barrels. It was then blended and aged in 225-liter French oak barrels for 6 months, followed by 12 months in the bottle.
The 2020 harvest in Rioja was challenging, with a warm year, high humidity, heavy rainstorms, and hail, especially in Rioja Alta. Despite these challenges, the harvest, which took place at the end of September, was short but productive, with excellent acidity that promises high-quality wines.
