Felton Road is one of New Zealand’s most premium wineries, situated in the prestigious Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago, it excels in Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay.

The estate is farmed Biodynamically (an extension of organic farming) and adopts minimal intervention in the winery, with practices such as using wild yeasts and not fining or filtering the wine. This allows the unique character of the estate’s vineyards to express themselves in the wine. Block 5 is situated on a gentle north facing slope in the heart of The Elms vineyard and was planted in 1993. The wine spent 16 months in barrel (35% new French) with two rackings and no fining or filtration, before bottling in early-August 2016.

‘The nose is vivid, fine and elegant with not one component vying for attention. This exquisite harmony is echoed on the palate where the refinement and ethereal nature of the wine demands deeper contemplation and careful respect. The wine is not heavy yet has solid underlying tannins giving the finish a serious structure and length. A classic Block 5.’ –

Enjoyable and approachable now but will continue to develop up to 15 years plus. Pairs excellently with roast game birds, lamb or mushroom risotto.

The Elms Vineyard
'Fruit from The Elms Vineyard is varied in personality.  Pinot Noir from the deepest parts of our Waenga bench in Block 3 generates particular finesse and complexity.  The same bench develops more clay and weight in Block 5, 100 metres farther east, something that is clearly reflected in the wine from there. Pinot Noir on lighter soils (Lochar) in Block 2, though of identical plant selections, is lighter and less impressive in tone. Block 2, however, seems ideal for Chardonnay and Riesling, while the heavier soils give extra weight to Riesling in Block 1. We have seen impressive depth in Chardonnay from Block 6 where we have soil very similar to that in Block 2. While the soils in  Blocks 10 and 11 farther up the valley are very promising, vines are too young to confirm the potential as yet. The same is true of Block 13, perched on the hill behind the winery.' -
